July 23 DCWOC Meeting
Club News     Rich Gillock     Monday 07 July 2008 - 06:30:00 pm

evote_photo1_550x383_2.jpgJuly 23 DCWOC Meeting
Brett Rowley, Communications Director
Orange County Registrar of Voters

Brett Rowley will be our speaker this month and he will be talking about the voter registration process, the design of the system, the legalities involved, and what his office--The Orange County Registrar of Voters is actually charged with doing. And of course he will answer all our questions about voter registration—which we should be doing a lot of between now and October 20th.

And if we have time I think it will be interesting to learn about the experiences that Mr. Rowley had working as an observer to the Iraqi National Elections. I have taken the liberty of excerpting his comments on this.  The Iraqi people were voting for representatives to fill seats in their new parliament. It was only the second vote of the people since the ouster of Saddam Hussein. The first vote was for their interim Constitution held in early 2005. The parliamentary election was held in Iraq on December 15, 2005. Iraqis that live out-of country had the opportunity to vote between December 13-15, 2005 in countries around the world including the United States.

iraq_voting2.jpgThe International Mission for Iraqi Elections (IMIE) was the only international observer organization accredited by the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq to observe the election. IMIE needed observers for three polling stations in California (Alameda, Los Angeles and San Diego.)   Brett Rowley was selected as one of the observers at the San Diego polling place. There were approximately 10 observers divided among the three sites in California and a total of 400 around the world.

As he says “I was not merely an observer of the mechanics of the Iraqi election. I was a witness to history on a global scale. The faces of the 4,000 people that voted in San Diego told a heart-wrenching story. The tears of joy reflected the pain and suffering felt over the decades that nobody but they could truly understand. I talked to one man whose brother was forced to fight in the Iraqi military against Iran for years and eventually fought against our country in 1991. My brother fought in Kuwait in 1991. It was an odd feeling to be standing next to a man whose brother had taken up arms against mine. But understanding that many Iraqis were forced to fight and hearing it from an Iraqi, I can hold no ill will against him, his brother or his renewed country.

Clearly this is a speaker who will have much to share with us about the electoral process here in Orange County as well as around the world.

Democrats at the Orange County Fair
Club News     Rich Gillock     Monday 30 June 2008 - 07:00:00 pm

The Democratic Party of Orange County once again has a booth at the Orange County Fair.  This has been a very successful event for the party focusing upon voter registration and enabling our candidates.

ocfairkarenbolinger2.jpgIt is so cool when a Republican walks up to the booth and wants to change his registration to Democrat.  There are so many Americans out there who just want their country back and their honor as Americans back.  In the past 6 months the party has registered over 35,000 new Democrats, the Republicans have registered less than 3,000 in the same period.

Our Democratic Club will staff the table on Thursday July 17 and Friday July 18. Shifts are from 12 noon - 3 pm, 3 pm -6 pm , 6 pm - 9 pm, and 9 pm -11 pm.  We need two volunteers per shift, so sign up early and pick the spot that works for you.  Parking and admission thickets are free and will be mailed 1 week before the dates.  Feel free to enjoy the Orange County Fair on us in exchange for a few hours of volunteer time.

Contact our Volunteer Organizer, Marko Markovich, at Makast@aol.com, or call him at (714) 270-5696.

ken_arnold_small.jpg Ken wants to serve the district as its assemblyman: to legislate based upon knowledge, truth, reason and common sense rather than worn and discredited right-wing ideologies, to try to make our vast state government more effective and efficient - providing the required services while making the most of our tax dollars, to fight for universal health care, for our and the world’s environment, for workers’, women’s and everyone’s full rights, for our children, schools, colleges and universities, for our beaches, parks, and libraries, for effective law enforcement, fire protection and other aspects of public safety, for just laws and a state judicial system that may again exercise judgment in the service of justice, for restoring and protecting our infrastructure, for helping bring to California the energy and transportation infrastructure of the 21st century, for rebuilding our national guard after the illegal devastation of it by this administration and its criminal occupation of Iraq, for rational redistricting and reliable electoral processes that will result in elected officials responsive to all their constituents, for a growing Orange County and California economy and business community that serves its employees as well as its owners, customers and neighbors and that is profitable yet socially and environmentally responsible, for rational affordable public transportation, for proper and appropriate care for the truly needy elderly and others, to fight for all this and much more Ken wants to serve.
